In what might seem an unlikely combination, actor and photographer Bill Ward (best known for his role as Charlie Stubbs in Coronation Street) delivered a compelling session last evening at Stroud Camera Club, on how the theory of acting can deeply inform creative photography. Bill made clear that he feels everyones photography is creative, it is not just about Intentional Camera Movement. Bill’s enthusiasm was infectious as he guided the audience through key principles of acting, referencing renowned figures such as Konstantin Stanislavsky and Philippe Gaulier. Though these names may be unfamiliar to most photographers, Bill demonstrated how closely linked the two disciplines are—particularly in the areas of joy, play, and truth.
Bill emphasized the importance of infusing personal authenticity into creative work, using powerful quotes from both the acting and photography worlds, as well as examples from his time in advertising. His message: photography, like acting, is about revealing ourselves through our craft.
The theory session was followed by a breathtaking showcase of Bill’s recent photography projects. From the soulful beaches of Brittany to vanishing theatres and reflective canal scenes, Bill’s evocative imagery illustrated his concepts. His most recent project, an immersive experience with the sea, saw him donning a wetsuit and DSLR to capture the raw power and beauty of the waves.
The event left attendees inspired and motivated to approach their photography with childlike imagination, playfulness, and a deep connection to their own creative spirit.
