Stroud Camera Club was thrilled to welcome back speaker Derek Gale, a professional photographer from Worcester. Known for his engaging presentations, Derek captivated the audience with his talk, Movement in Photography, during his recent visit.

Throughout the evening, Derek delved into the endless possibilities of capturing movement, whether showcasing or freezing it. The recurring phrase, "It depends," echoed as he guided attendees through creative approaches to subject and camera movement. His insights emphasized how each scenario offers unique opportunities to achieve dynamic photographic results from the more traditional ICM of a woodland glade, to more unconventional zooming whilst rotating the camera (and not the lens).Derek shared a variety of techniques to bring motion to life in photography and also how to stop the motion, demonstrating different effects of shutter speed for examples such as rotorblades and water.

For those members who shoot with an Olympus camera, his section on the  Olympus Live Composite was well received, demonstrating how this can be use for amongst other things striking light trails - including his efforts to actually write "Light trails" backwards - realising afterwards he could have simply flipped the image in post processing! Other tips included the Huawei silky water app for smooth water effects, and other ingenious methods for controlling or emphasizing movement. His expertise inspired both novice and seasoned photographers alike, leaving everyone eager to experiment with these ideas.

Stroud Camera Club thanks Derek for another outstanding evening and looks forward to future visits. Thought-provoking presentations from excellent speakers continue to enrich our understanding of photography and push the boundaries of creativity.
